HSS since Inception

On 18th June 1908 some like minded social workers from Mapusa laid the foundation of the Institution DNYANPRASSARAK MANDAL with the noble intention of spreading education among the masses. They started a Primary Marathi school called DNYANPRASSARAK VIDYALAYA and a public library "DURGA VACHAN MANDIR". The inances for this noble purpose was raised by DHARMA MUTH (handful of rice collected from house to house everyday by the volunteers) and a token subscription received from the members of the public. To begin with the school was run with one teacher and just 20 students. In 1922, Vaishya Mandal was founded with the intention to help the Dnyanprassarak Mandal with necessary monetary aid. The classes were held in private premises; first in the house of Mr. Kochkar and later at the residence of Mr. Khalap.

As the school grew, in course of time, a need was felt to have our own permanent accommodation and so in the year 1935, Vaishya Mandal constructed their own building the "Vaishya Bhuvan" in the heart of Mapusa city and allotted the same for conducting school classes to Dnyanprassarak Mandal.

One feature of this primary school was that in addition to Marathi classes, Portuguese classes in-Primeiro Gravo and Segundo Gravo were also conducted since 1936.

The sequel to this progressive movement was to arrange for secondary education. The Mandal was alive to this problem and in the course of time a fully developed High School was recognised to send the students for the SSC Examination of Poona Board from 1956. In the year 1974, the University-of Bombay granted afiliation to conduct a Commerce college from June 1974. Initially the degree college functioned at Vaishya Bhuvan in the heart of Mapusa city. June 1975 saw the birth of our Junior college at the little town of Mapusa with just the commerce stream.

Subsequently the Mandal acquired land admeasuring 80,000 square meters at the top of the Assagao Hill. The ground floor of the college building was completed by the end of December 1982 and the college started functioning in the new building from 10th January 1983. The Junior college too was shifted to the hillock of Assagao, the land of flowers, about a kilometer from the town of Mapusa. The Higher Secondary School pioneered teaching of Commerce to the community of Bardez and due to the excellent results the Institution added the Vocational stream with three courses namely Office Secretaryship and Stenography, Accountancy and Auditing, Computer Technique.

The Institution was fortunate to find many magnanimous donors like Mrs Sarojini M Kushe and Late Mr Madhusudhan D. Kushe who made the independent commerce stream possible. The commerce stream was thus named as P.V.S. Sarojini Madhusudhan Kushe Junior College of Commerce. The rush for admission was so much that in the year 1992 the Arts stream was introduced in the name of Naguexa S. Goundalkar Junior College of Arts and due to the pressing demands of the parents, in the year 1993 the Science stream was inaugurated in the name of Zairam Bhikaji Neugui Junior College of Science.

August 23, 2003 is a memorable day for Dnyanprassarak Mandal as the new Higher Secondary building (having all the streams under one roof) was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister, Mr. Manohar Parrikar at PVS Kushe Nagar, Assagao, Bardez, Goa. The untiring efforts, zeal and vision of the management has made the little hillock of Assagao P. V. S. Kushe Nagar into a sanctuary of learning. We also received the honour of being acknowledged as one of the 100 Best schools of India by the Engineering Watch School Summit, New Delhi. The Institution aims to provide Holistic Value-based and All Round Education to the students, so that they face the future social, economic and other challenges of life in a balanced and harmonious way.

Our huge campus, far from the hustle and bustle of life, is conducive not only for learning but also to tap our students' hidden talents and provide them a platform for the same. We believe in the true definition of Education being a wholistic development and therefore engineer our students to face every aspect of life with a smile. This is done by organising for them a whole load of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
